Subscriber Account active since. New York has a reputation as a party capital of the world, where sex is free and easy and unmarried adults outnumber their married counterparts. Glued to smartphones at every waking moment, New Yorkers shop online for everything from jobs to food. So why not love? Promises of lasting happiness, a kinky affair or a one-night stand — all at the click of a button — are dangled before lonely hearts who sign onto a dazzling array of dating sites.
In a column last Saturday headlined “Love, Internet Style,” the New York Times’ new conservative op-ed columnist David Brooks explained why he believes the internet is bringing back dating and courtship rituals from some bygone era. Since couples can “exchange e-mail for weeks and months” rather than hop in the sack right away, he explains, the internet is providing the “restraint” we so desire.
Hawking online dating services such as eHarmony, Brooks declared that, “Online dating puts structure back into courtship. Curious about that structure, I clicked over to eHarmony, only to find that they don’t serve my kind. This unprecedented research into compatibility has been conducted with the goal of lowering the rate of unsuccessful marriages and divorce by providing singles with a tool for finding truly compatible matches with whom to pursue a relationship.
With this goal in mind, eHarmony’s research has only examined heterosexual relationships. Since when did dating services have such high-minded goals as “lowering the rate of unsuccessful marriages” rather than simply trying to make some money? Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that eHarmony’s co-founder is Neil Clark Warren, PhD, a psychologist and author whose books and services are heavily promoted by religious-right groups like Focus on the Family.
Few conservatives are better than the eloquent David Brooks at making an agenda seem like an organic, ideology-free trend. But this was a tad desperate, since the way the internet really seems to be shaping sex and marriage is enough to send Jerry Falwell into yet another fire and brimstone tirade. Lately, I’ve noticed the rise of what we might call the Kinsey ones and twos.

A Newport Beach orthopedic surgeon and his teacher girlfriend are accused of preying on women at local restaurants and bars, slipping at least one a so-called date rape drug, sexually assaulting her after she was too intoxicated to resist and recording video of her, prosecutors say. Grant William Robicheaux, 38, and Brea resident Cerissa Laura Riley, 31, worked in tandem, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said Tuesday at a news conference announcing charges against the couple in connection with two alleged assaults.
Robicheaux and Riley face one charge each of rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by controlled substance and assault with intent to commit a sexual offense, plus four charges each of possession of a controlled substance for sale. Robicheaux also faces two charges of possession of an assault weapon. Both have been released on bail. Rackauckas said the alleged attacks did not take place in a clinical setting or with drugs that would typically be used for medical treatment.
Robicheaux and Ms. Riley believe that such allegations do a disservice to, and dangerously undermine, the true victims of sexual assault, and they are eager to have the proper spotlight shed on this case in a public trial. Robicheaux has been licensed to practice medicine in California since Riley has been a substitute teacher in Fullerton, according to a video she appeared in that Rackauckas played at the news conference.
The California Department of Teacher Credentialing lists Riley as having a substitute teaching credential from through March this year.
